James Guy Evans (1809-59) created the original oil painting of the Brig Georgiana in 1846. Born in New York City, Evans worked as a shoemaker before enlisting in the Marine Corps. Records reveal he worked as a commercial painter in New Orleans until his death, painting houses, ships and signs in addition to his historical, marine and ornamental paintings. Colonial Williamsburg?s Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Folk Art Museum houses the original oil painting that inspired this dramatic piece.
